CHANGE IMPERIAL DRAWING TO METRIC AND METRIC TO IMPERIAL IN AUTO CAD (Part-1)

In Auto Cad we do Engineering drawing. Engineering is strictly specified with units and scale factor. Mostly we use Imperial or Metric unit But sometime we want to change the unit type of whole drawing sheet in Imperial to Metric or Metric to Imperial. Here the problem starts. There are two ways to solve the problem
1. Draw the whole sheet again with new change units. Its ok for extreme small drawing or who don't know the trick method.
And 2. Understanding the trick which I explain.

I divided this blog in two parts for better understanding this is Part-1. Here I explain the way to CHANGE IMPERIAL DRAWING TO METRIC. In Part-2, I explain how to CHANGE METRIC DRAWING TO IMPERIAL.

So lets start.

CHANGE IMPERIAL DRAWING TO METRIC.

We know that 1 inch is equal to 25.4 mm. That means the length of 1 inch line in 25.4 times bigger than the line of 1 mm. This is the Concept We apply. If  I want to explain this in Scale Concept the  the scale factor will be 1 : 25.4. How to apply this concept in Auto Cad ?
 Ok let me applying this in step by step.

1. Suppose I have a drawing in Imperial Units which I want to convert. Open the Imperial drawing.

2. Next step is open another auto cad sheet in Metric unit because our new drawing will be in metric unit. If you don't know how to set a page in Metric Unit, you me go through my another Blog.

3. Copy the whole Imperial Sheet drawing by selecting the drawing and press Ctrl+c.

4. Paste copied drawing in newly opened Metric Sheet by Ctrl+v.

5. Now if you check any dimension it shows only in "inch" conversion because Metric unit is sets in decimal unit and "inch" is the decimal from of "ft".

6. Now the tricky part comes. We just type "SCALE" and hit enter in metric page drawing and select the whole drawing. Its prompts for " Specify base point" Click any point in the screen. Then its prompt for "Specify scale factor" type 25.4 and hit enter.

7. Now the drawing is completely converted in Metric unit.

FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING PURPOSE We consider 1 inch is equal to 25 mm.
 So, for civil drawing follow the above steps as it is but in Step 7. change "Specify scale factor"  25.4 to 25 . Now your drawing is ready.
