STACK MEASUREMENT OF BUILDING MATERIALS

What is Stack Measurement of Building Materials ? How is it works ? 
OK many question arises in mind when we read the tropic name. Let me clear one by one. 
Measurement of Building materials is important for knowing the volume of materials. Instead of measuring building materials we not sure that how much materials we want to buy or ordered and how much materials we received.

There are many materials used to construct a structure, out of them few materials are stored in Stacks. So first we identify which materials can be stored in stacks. 


Materials Stored in Stacks

Fine sand, Medium Sand , Various types of Stone chips , Moorum, Gravel, Bricks etc. can be stored as stack. Out of them bricks stacks are different type. I explain bricks stack in another blog.


How Stacks are Looked

Many of us noticed sand, stone chips etc. are stacked in road side or construction site. But if you watch carefully its must be a specific pattern. Stacks are provided in Trapezoidal form or section.

How to Measure a Stack

As I told stacks are provided in trapezoidal section, So we just find out the total volume of that trapezoidal section in a certain process.
Volume is the product of three dimension - Length, Breadth & Height.

Find Height

As per figure - ABCDEFGH is a trapezoidal section. ABCD is the bottom and EFGH is the top plane of the trapezoidal section. So it is obvious that EFGH is at certain distance from ABCD. Lets find the distance using tape, not the inclined height, vertical height only. At least four measurement required from four side and take average of all measurement. Suppose the average is "H".

Find Length

As per figure form top plane edge GF to bottom plane edge AD a measurement (horizontal,not inclined) is taken( L 1 ). Another measurement (horizontal,not inclined) form top plane edge EH to bottom plane edge BC is taken( L 2 ). Now average it - ( L1 + L2 )/2 say "L".

Find Breadth

As per figure form top plane edge GH to bottom plane edge AB a measurement (horizontal,not inclined) is taken( B 1 ). Another measurement (horizontal,not inclined) form top plane edge EF to bottom plane edge DC is taken( B 2 ). Now average it - ( B1 + B2 )/2 say "B".

Calculation

We find the three dimension Length (L) , Breadth (B), and Height (H) for calculating the volume of stack. So, the VOLUME - L x B x H cubic unit.
But this is not the actual volume. One step more. When we stack the materials some voids are created we must deduct the voids from the original volume. But how to measure voids ?? Don't worry I give you PWD work Schedule listed with Allowance to be deduced for shrinkage.

Now we have to deduct some volume as follows.
Original Volume ( Vori ) = L x B x H cubic unit.
Less voids( Vvoid ) = [ 1/13, 1/9, 1/8 whatever it as per material ] x  Vori  Cubic Unit.
So Net Volume = ( Vori ) - ( Vvoid ) Cubic Unit.
